Zinc is your friend

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition recently reported that cardio fitness can be affected by a diet low in the mineral zinc. Zinc is important especially in the stages of adolescence, but equally vital in adults. Nuts, seeds and beans are perfect food items to help increase zinc. Remember, however, not to ingest zinc in tablet form on an empty stomach as it could cause irritation of the stomach lining.

Shake up your training routine

As we mentioned above, you may feel you’re becoming a little stale during workouts. If you feel like you have plateaued, or just have become a little bored, then you should mix things up. Changing a little bit of your routine every 4 to 8 weeks should recharge you as well as keep your mind and physique challenged a bit. Remember, even subtle change of scenery can help.

Get plenty of shut-eye

As you engage in either high or moderate intensity workouts, you can almost guarantee better sleep quality. When you hit the sack in the evening of having a workout session, your body repairs itself through sleep. You will also fall asleep more quickly and stay asleep more deeply and snooze longer.

Reward your body with food

Your body will say ‘thank you’ when after a workout, you nosh away on healthy food. This fuel helps your body recover from the strains and stress of a fitness workout. The ideal things to eat? Proteins, such as tofu, eggs, nuts, seeds and lean fish like salmon or tuna. ‘Good,’ healthful carbohydrates like brown rice or steel-cut oats and good fats – think avocado, peanut butter and yes, those versatile nuts and seeds again (keep the fats to a moderate portion, however!).
