4 Easy Ways to Boost Your Metabolism

By June 24, 2014 No Comments

Beyond the science of how your metabolic rate works are some simple tricks to tweaking the process

Your metabolism is a chemical process whereby fuel from food is converted to energy. Sounds simple, but the science behind it is a little more complex. When it’s said that someone has a sluggish metabolism, the end result means that person often has difficulty losing weight.

If you think this sounds like you, you can fight back each day by doing a few simple things.

Don’t skip breakfast

Whether it’s a small or elaborate affair, breakfast should not be skipped. There is good reason it’s called the most important meal of the day. A good healthy breakfast beats sugar cravings and keeps you from getting hungry later on which leads to a sluggish metabolism.

Work it out

Fat is a three-letter word when you’re trying to shed weight. Believe it or not, the secret lies in weightlifting and women who strength train can lose close to 100% of their weight in fat.

If you’re curious about trying strength training, ask one of our trainers at Warwick Women’s Workout about getting started on this beneficial regimen.

And when you do work out, think smarter

You needn’t spend hours working out like a madwoman to get your metabolism kick-started. If you engage in high intensity exercise over a shorter time period (for instance, 20 minutes as opposed to less intense exercise for an hour), your metabolism will get a bigger boost. Your body will be able to metabolise sugars easier and not just during the workouts, but for many hours thereafter.

Get more protein in your diet

Keep in mind that not only the time of day that you eat has an effect on your metabolic burn rate, but: surprise! what you eat does as well. Lean protein will give you a feeling of being full and your metabolism works harder to process the food. Vegetarians and vegans need not worry about missing out on protein: tofu, beans and dark, leafy green veggies are protein-rich, too.
