If you’re under pressure, don’t let that get in the way of being comfortable.
Many healthcare professionals believe in the power of simple stretching to relieve stress. Tension can be banished easily by holding a stretch for 15 seconds or so for almost instant relief.
Stretching can increase your circulation
Stress is known to restrict blood flow. Restricted blood flow can lead to a number of maladies, including the cardiovascular kind. Doing simple stretching will let blood flow freely to muscles, including the heart. If you’ve ever spent a day in an office chair, you’ll know that stretching every now and then can make you more alert and competent.
Stretching is a natural pain reliever
Tense bodies are more prone to injury. When your muscles are tense, that creates an opportunity for them to ‘freeze’ up, restricting movement. Again, the increased blood flow to tight muscles helps act as a natural pain reliever. It’s a great option if you don’t like taking aspirin or other medications for pain.
Stretching and breathing are ideal partners
Deep breathing – during stretching or other like exercises – has benefits to help relieve pain and reduce stress. Breathing and stretching in concert together helps the flow of oxygen throughout the body and keeps blood pressure at stable levels.
Your body is telling you to stretch!
Listen to what your body is telling you. If you are that person sat in an office chair daily, your body needs you to take a 5 or 10 minute break to get the blood flowing again. Decompress from the cares of the office by walking down the hall or go outside for fresh air.
Other options for natural stress relief
Reducing tension in your body is important to your overall well being. Other activities that include stretching are yoga and tai chi – simple, gentle movements that incorporate stretching in their regimen.
So start stretching today! Your mind and your body will thank you.
