Don’t hesitate to lose the weight – get the skinny on what to expect in the gym

If you’ve never before set foot inside a fitness centre – we have news for you. It doesn’t have to be scary. Remember, everyone inside the gym working out had a ‘first time’ as well.

Whether you choose a co-ed gym or a ladies’ fitness facility, we’re here to ease any concerns.

Tips for the First Time Gym Goer

Don’t be afraid to ask

There are plenty of people on hand who will assist you with becoming familiar with the inner workings of the gym, its equipment and so forth. Hopefully you will have had a preliminary tour of the facility before deciding to make it your workout home away from home.

But on your first day, you can calm those jitters and ask a director or trainer for help. No one will think you are silly for asking. Better to get the correct information off the bat!

Dear diary…

Keeping a journal or diary at the beginning of your fitness adventure is a very good idea. One year down the road, you’ll be able to see what worked for you (and what didn’t). You can keep track of your exercises, measurements, weight and even the mood you were in on a particular training day. When you keep a diary, you’ll be able to see your goals in print, which will motivate you even more.

Listen to your body

We’re all human. If you take a look around at all of the other people in the gym, you’ll see that they are human too. Be assured that they have their ‘off’ days, where they probably don’t feel like working out. If your body is telling you it needs rest, then give it rest. Everyone needs to revitalise in different ways. The gym will always be there when you need it.
