The thyroid rundown
This gland in your neck yields hormones that can affect metabolism. An underactive thyroid, however, can wreak havoc on your efforts to lose weight because it can slow your metabolism to a crawl. This is called hypothyroidism.
It’s a wise idea to consult your physician if you have any of the following symptoms together, to make certain it really is your thyroid at play. Symptoms of hypothyroidism can include: high cholesterol; a feeling of being cold all the time; sudden weight gain; depression; trouble focussing on simple tasks; exhaustion; thinning hair and dry nails; sudden aches and pains.
Having your thyroid examined

Things to avoid if you suffer from hypothyroidism
Certain foods and supplements can interfere with your thyroid medication. You should stay away from soy products because they can interfere with peroxidase, which is needed to help your body generate thyroid hormones such as iodine.
Avoid the grain millet, as well as citrus, beer, parsley, red wine and onions for the same reason as soy. Processed and fried foods can also interfere with thyroid medication.
