Is Your Thyroid Making You Gain Weight?

By November 20, 2014 No Comments

If you’re sluggish and can’t drop the weight, it’s time to check your thyroid.

Have you tried to lose weight to no avail, even though you’ve devoted plenty of time to your fitness program? Do you feel out of sorts and not quite yourself? Is your hair thinning or are you feeling foggy? If you’re aged 40 or older and answered yes, then perhaps it’s time to have your thyroid gland examined.

Your Thyroid Making You Gain Weight

The thyroid rundown

This gland in your neck yields hormones that can affect metabolism. An underactive thyroid, however, can wreak havoc on your efforts to lose weight because it can slow your metabolism to a crawl. This is called hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroid symptoms

It’s a wise idea to consult your physician if you have any of the following symptoms together, to make certain it really is your thyroid at play. Symptoms of hypothyroidism can include: high cholesterol; a feeling of being cold all the time; sudden weight gain; depression; trouble focussing on simple tasks; exhaustion; thinning hair and dry nails; sudden aches and pains.

Having your thyroid examined

It can be done simply by having your healthcare practitioner draw a small sample of your blood. Results will show if your thyroid is normal or is the culprit giving you trouble. Medication often can reverse a sluggish thyroid, so talk with your doctor about your options. Ideally you should have your thyroid examined every two years after you reach the age of 50.

Things to avoid if you suffer from hypothyroidism

Certain foods and supplements can interfere with your thyroid medication. You should stay away from soy products because they can interfere with peroxidase, which is needed to help your body generate thyroid hormones such as iodine.

Avoid the grain millet, as well as citrus, beer, parsley, red wine and onions for the same reason as soy. Processed and fried foods can also interfere with thyroid medication.
